Team chemistry is one of the keys to success, and this years girls hockey team exemplifies this better than any.
In the locker room before games, they go around and share their goals for the game. We have magic time, said Leila Dalum 27. We’ll have one of our captains, Janie [McGawn 26], she’ll have a bottle of glitter and…what we do is we say three things, what our goals are gonna be before we go on the ice, and she sprinkles it on as motivation, explained Dalum.
The magic carries over onto the ice. The team currently has a record of 17-4-0 and has only lost to two teams – Dodge County and Breck. Even their losses have been highlights of the season. The first time we played Breck, I thought that we were playing really good and I just loved all the energy. I loved all the people who came out, said Mak Williams 26. Although the team is not too hung up on the loss, Williams still added, I definitely think we should have won that game.
The key to their successful record has been the things that cannot be replicated by pure talent. I think our teams strengths are our energy and the way we come out. Especially bench energy and cheering each other on, said Dalum. Williams also emphasized bonding and supporting each other as strengths. She also added, We work really hard despite adversity, whether it’s in the game or in practice.
Going forward, their goals are typical of any team. Dalum laid it out: Win sections, go to state, and win state. A deep playoff run is likely for this team. We definitely have the potential of getting that far because we have such a good, dynamic team,î said Williams. The team already has a better record than last year, and plans to keep building on its success.
