Based on Freida McFadden’s 2022 novel, the newly released movie adaptation “The Housemaid,” starring Sydney Sweeney & Amanda Seyfried, is a psychological thriller that left us shocked and confused at every twist and turn. The Housemaid follows a young woman who accepts a seemingly perfect job as a live-in housemaid. As the movie progresses, the life of the wealthy family she’s living with begins to unravel, exposing secrets that couldn’t have been anticipated. It combines romance, mystery, and action to tell a compelling story that will leave you thinking for days after you leave the theater.
Going in without reading the book, we had no idea what to expect and were making predictions from the very beginning. However, every time we thought we were sure of what was going to happen, there was a shocking plot twist that changed our entire perspective. While many people believe you should always read the book before seeing the movie, we enjoyed not knowing what was going to happen and making predictions as the movie went on. The only information we knew going in was that there was gore, but most scenes looked unrealistic, and it is a relatively small part of the movie. Seeing the movie influenced us to purchase the book.
This movie will open your eyes to the things people mask in their everyday lives, changing your perception of the truth. The movie will cause you to question everything you think you know, and even cause you to wonder how much you can really trust anyone. Though themes of manipulation, torment, and betrayal ran rampant, there were also glimmers of hope, shown through moments of survival and resilience.
Some critiques we had about the movie were that it seemed unnecessarily violent at times, and that most of the action occurred during the last thirty minutes. The movie goes for two hours and 13 minutes, but we felt that the action could’ve either been more spread out throughout the movie or the movie could’ve been shorter.
We rate this movie an 8.5/10. We were constantly on the edge of our seats, anticipating what would happen next. This rating isn’t a perfect 10 because the movie got off to a slow start. However, we would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who is considering watching it.
