Girls’ Soccer dominance ends in State

Girls+Soccer+dominance+ends+in+State

Although the team lost 4-1 in the section semi-finals last season against Benilde St. Margaret, the team has rebounded this season by qualifying for the state tournament after shutting out DeLaSalle 3-0 on October 19. This feat is surprising to some due to the young nature of the team. CC Wallin ‘18 comments, “I would say we are definitely stronger than last year just because we have a really strong younger class, we have four seniors, but we all still have strong personalities and a ton of freshman and I would say that all around we have a good attitude for the team.”

The Bears finished this season with a winning record of 13-4-2 with pivotal wins over Totino-Grace and DeLaSalle in the section tournament. The Bears benefitted from a DeLaSalle win over Benilde St Margaret in the section semi-finals. BGS also tied Orono in one of the last games of the regular season, despite Orono being consistently ranked the number one team in the coaches polls in Class 1A.

The Bears lost to Visitation 5-4 in a penalty shoot out in the first round of the State Tournament on October 25. The game was 0-0 heading into the shoot out and the Bears fought hard the whole game. Had they won, the team would have faced number one Orono again in the semi- finals at US Bank Stadium.

This was the first time since 2013 that the team qualified for the state tournament and is the team’s tenth trip to the State Tournament since 1997.
