Hi, my name is Cleo, I'm a senior and began writing for Spectrum as a freshman. Last semester, I was the Variety, Photo, and Social Media Editor. I love taking photos and capturing fun moments with people. Outside of school my favorite things are running and spending time with friends and family.

Environmental Sustainability, one of the topics a group of students in the class looked into for their final project. In the group was Mackenzie Higgins ‘24, Michelle Elliott ‘25, Ella Chester ‘24, Ruhi Kurdikar ‘25 and Sarah Hsia ‘25. This group researched how the community views environmental sustainability. Based on the SPARC survey, they found ways to educate and better practices for the community. The group also created a word cloud as a method of research for their project. The word cloud was filled with words students think of when they think about environmental sustainability. The group explored discrepancy of community intent and actions, and the discrepancy of community priorities. At the end of their presentation the group came up with recommendations for classes incorporating environmental sustainability into their curriculums, students having more exposure to the topic, more attention to the issue, empower students, add new core values or add to one of the existing core values like respect.

Both Maddie and Sarah maintain their passion for service by remaining involved in various communities. Over winter break, Maddie volunteered with Alight, at organization that helps to resettle Afghan refugees. She explained, “we had a bunch of different events that I ended up going to, including a figure skating event to teach Afghan youth how to skate ... It was hard for them because they kept falling, but really heartwarming to see that they were laughing.” Sarah attended events at Everymeal and Feed my Starving Children. In the future, she hopes to continue to volunteer with those organizations and branch out to discover new ways to help.

In light of the abortion ban in Texas, many have been troubled with the lack of consistency from the Texas government. Activists have found it confusing that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced an executive order in Aug. 2021 banning government COVID-19 vaccination mandates in the state. However, after signing the new abortion law, Abbott tweeted that every “unborn child with a heartbeat will be saved from the ravages of abortion.”This political cartoon aims to call attention to the hypocrisy, and even irony, within Texas laws.
